All her life she had believed in something more, in the mystery that shape-shifted at the edge of her senses. It was the flutter of moth wings on glass and the promise of river nymphs in the dappled creek beds. It was the smell of oak trees on the summer evening she fell in love, and the way dawn threw itself across the cow pond and turned the water to light. -Eowyn Ivey
After the previous shoot we did with Sheila-Madge’s dresses, she asked if we would like to photograph another dress that she hasn’t revealed yet. Of course, we jumped at the opportunity to work with this incredibly talented and just plain awesome lady again. So, we started planning how we’re going to showcase this unique dress… We wanted mystery, whimsy and moody and we got all of that and more.
It was one of those shoots where everything just fell into place naturally until it didn’t, or did it? I was delighted when Anna Pepper from The Refinery Hair and Make Up agreed to join in. A while back we sent Saltlight Studios an email after seeing the first wedding film they shared on social media. I fell in love with their honesty and the sensitive approach to lighting and editing. I took a shot in the dark and asked if they would like to come along on the shoot. We had the venue, the dress, the makeup, photos and video! We were all ready to shoot on Sunday, Gustav from Saltlight had booked his flight to Pretoria, Anna was ready to make magic and of course the rest of us were bouncing up and down just colouring the pictures we’ve already created in our minds. The rain started to no end and I spent every 10 minutes checking to see if it might stop. It didn’t. The lovely folks from Harmonie Proteas phoned us and warned us about the downpour, but we couldn’t quite let go. We decided to just ‘go it’ as Sheila-Madge would say. So armed with a bulk pack of ziplock bags, umbrellas, and boots we hit the road.
The rain swayed between pouring and drizzling and our nerves were starting to feel it. Just as our beautiful model stepped out the rain started to become a drizzle and we had the most wonderful shoot. This is one of those days we’ll remember forever. We drove back home cold and excited with happy hearts and confidence in our unwavering craziness.
Thank you to everyone involved! For the sherry sipping, the stressed popcorn eating and all the great memories.
